It is the former capital of the princely state of Rewa and the former state of Vindhya Pradesh. The city lies about 420 kilometres (261 mi) northeast of the state capital Bhopal and 130 kilometres (81 mi) south of the city of Allahabad. Rewa derives its name from another name for the Narmada River.
Rewa is connected to Satna through the 50 km Rewa Satna Rail Line. Satna falls on the Mumbai Howrah main line via Allahabad. Nearby highways include NH 7, NH 27, and NH 75. The nearest airports are at Khajuraho, Allahabad, Jabalpur and Varanasi. Rewa also has an air strip at Churhata, approximately 7 km from the city centre off NH 7.
As of 2001, Rewa had a population of about 183,000. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Rewa has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Rewa, 13% of the population is under 6 years old.
Points of interest in the city include Rewa Fort and Museum, Shilpi Plaza, APS University Stadium, the Venkat Bhawan and Shiva Temple, and the Rani Talab Temple and Water Tank. The surrounding area is home to the Bansagar Dam, many waterfalls, and a giant statue of Shiva called “Bhairom BaBa”
Rawa is home to many schools and colleges, including Awadhesh Pratap Singh University Govt. T.R.S.College and the Government Engineering College, Rewa. It is also home to two government medical colleges, Sanjay Gandhi Hospital and Mahatma Gandhi Hospital.
